The Rosetta Stone

Rosetta (roh-zet-uh) stone: Discovered in 1799 the Rosetta stone has the same inscription in three languages; the top register is ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs (hahy-er-uh-glif-iks), the second Egyptian demotic script and the third is Ancient Greek. With its three languages, it is the key to deciphering ancient Egyptian.  It weighs approximately 1,680 lbs. and was created in the year 196 BC. Currently it is on display at the British Museum.
